Therapy for Midlife Transitions in Albany, NY
How can therapy help with navigating midlife?
You’re pretty sure this section isn’t for you. You’re young! You’re in good shape! You’re still healthy, and your knees only crack a bit when they bend. You’re convinced you could pass for 20 …until you see a 20 year old. But this can’t be right because you were just born 20 years ago …in the 1980s. What do you mean the year 2000 was a quarter century ago?
You have no urge to buy a sports car, but something has started to nag at you. When you used to imagine your life stretched before you the path seemed endless. You saved things for later, focusing on your career, or your family, or travel, and now you’re starting to realize you might not get to everything. Or maybe you still feel like you are figuring things out, when it seems like your peers have settled in.
You might be happily and decidedly child free. Or maybe you are navigating fertility, or grieving the ideal of a family you envisioned for yourself You might have teenagers and be thinking about having an empty nest in the next few years. Or you may be in the thick of parenting young kids, navigating daycare drop offs and PTA meetings and a demanding work schedule. You may be starting to understand the term “sandwich generation,” caring for both children and aging parents.
Midlife is a time of transition and change.
Hormones shift.
Priorities rearrange.
And the day to day demands can be endless.
With little time or space to process these transitions we can start to feel ungrounded in our identity. Old coping mechanisms and ways of dealing might not be working in a new system. Therapy with me can provide a space to process emotions, identify needs and explore with compassion the beliefs we may be holding on to that are holding us back. Times of transition can be stressful and difficult to manage. Transition can also be a catalyst to growth, to redefining and centering your priorities, so you can once again find your path and move forward with confidence.
Midlife doesn’t have to be a crisis
